Uterine Cancer Treatment

Various types of treatment options are available for uterine cancer treatment. Some treatments are standard treatment and some are tested in clinical trials. There are three types of standard treatment:

1. Surgery: Uterus cancer treatment by surgery is the most common treatment option.

a. Total hysterectomy: In this type of surgery, uterus along with the cervix is removed. If this surgery is done through vagina, then it is known as vaginal hysterectomy. If the surgery is done by a cut or a large incision in the abdomen then it is called as total abdominal hysterectomy. If the uterus and cervix are removed through a small incision in the abdomen by use of laparoscope, then this operation is called as total laparoscopic hysterectomy. Even if the cancer is removed by the doctor that is identified, still chemotherapy or radiation therapy is given after surgery to kill the cancer cells that are left. Adjuvant therapy is a treatment given after the surgery to increase the chances of cure.

2. Radiation therapy: In this type of uterine cancer treatment high energy X-rays or other types of radiation are used to kill cancer cells. The rays are aimed at the tumor and also the tissue around it. Radiation therapy is a local therapy and affects cells only in the treated area. Uterus cancer may also be treated in combination with surgery or chemotherapy. Radiation therapy is used to shrink a large tumor before surgery or destroy cancer cells. In external radiation therapy a machine outside the body is used to send radiation towards the cancer. In internal radiation, radioactive substances are used sealed in needles, seeds, wires and catheters that are placed near the cancer. The radiation therapy is given by considering the type and stage of cancer.

3. Hormone therapy: In this type of uterine cancer treatment cancer cells are deprived of hormones so that they do not grow. Drugs are given by mouth or by injection to remove hormone producing organs surgery might also be done. Some hormones can cause certain cancers to grow. If it is identified in tests that cancer cells have places where hormones can attach then treatment by drugs, radiation therapy or surgery is done.

3. Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy kills rapidly dividing cells including cancer cells. Chemotherapy drugs are taken in various forms. In Intravenous the drug is injected into a vein by a needle. It is also given orally in the form of a pill. Injection is also used wherein the doctor injects the drug directly into the muscle or the cancerous skin. Chemotherapy may be used as an only uterine cancer treatment or may be given in combination with radiation therapy or surgery. By regional chemotherapy, the drug is placed directly into the spinal column, an organ, or a body cavity such as the abdomen the drug mainly affects the cancer cells present in those areas.

4. Clinical trials: This is a study that is used to test new forms of therapy. New drugs, different approaches to surgery or radiation treatments and new methods are used. A patient might want to participate in clinical trails if having advanced stage of esophageal cancer.
