Tonsil Cancer TreatmentDifferent types of tonsil cancer treatment options are available for patients suffering from tonsil cancer. Some are standard treatments and some are being tested in clinical trials. When clinical trials are better tonsil cancer treatment options then they become standard treatments. There are three types of standard treatment options: 1. Surgery: Treating body illness by removing body tissue is called as surgery. Surgery is used when it is possible to remove the tumor and nearby tissues that contain cancer cells. Surgery is done to remove the primary tumor of the initial cancer even if it is not possible to remove the entire cancer by surgery. The part of the throat that is removed depends on the exact size of the tumor. Although the cancer is removed by the doctor that is seen, still chemotherapy or radiation therapy is given after surgery to kill the cancer cells that are left. Adjuvant therapy is a treatment given after the surgery to increase the chances of cure. 2. Radiation therapy: This tonsil cancer treatment is not only used to destroy the cancer cells but also to provide relief from symptoms. Radiation therapy may be used alone as a tonsil cancer treatment or in combination with other treatments like chemotherapy or other treatments. Radiation therapy is used to shrink a large tumor before surgery or destroy cancer cells. In external radiation therapy a machine outside the body is used to send radiation towards the cancer. In internal radiation, radioactive substances are used sealed in needles, seeds, wires and catheters that are placed near the cancer. Brachytherapy is used for small cancers. 3. Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is the most common treatment of choice for tonsil cancer. In this type of tonsil cancer treatment by drugs, the aim is to stop the growth of cancer cells or stop them from dividing. Chemotherapy is either given by mouth i.e., a pill or injected into a vein or a muscle. The drug enters the blood stream and reach cancer cells throughout the body. This is called as systemic chemotherapy. By regional chemotherapy, the drug is placed directly into the spinal column, an organ, or a body cavity such as the abdomen the drug mainly affects the cancer cells present in those areas. Chemotherapy helps in various ways like it shrinks the tumor before surgery, can be used with radiation therapy in combination when surgery is not possible or to relieve symptoms in advanced cases. 4. Radiosensitizers are drugs that are used to make tumor cells more sensitive to radiation therapy. Tonsil cancer treatment with combining radiation therapy and radiosensitizers might kill the tumor cells. 5. Hyperthermia therapy: This is a kind of treatment of tonsil cancer in which the tissues of the body is exposed to increased temperature and kill cancer cells. This therapy also helps to make the cancer cells more sensitive to the effects of radiation and anticancer drugs. 6. Clinical trials: This is a study that is used to test new forms of therapy. New drugs, different approaches to surgery or radiation treatments and new methods are used. A patient might want to participate in clinical trails if having advanced stage of esophageal cancer. |
