Testicular Cancer Treatment

The treatment of testicular cancer depends on patient.s situation like his general health and type of cancer. When clinical trials show that they are better treatment options then they become standard treatments. The different types of testicular cancer treatment options are as follows:

1. Surgery: Testicular cancer treatment by surgery is done to remove the testicle and some of the lymph nodes. Tumors that spread to other parts of the body are removed partly or entirely by surgery. Although the cancer is removed by the doctor that is identified, still chemotherapy or radiation therapy is given after surgery to kill the cancer cells that are left. Adjuvant therapy is a treatment given after the surgery to increase the chances of cure.

2. Radiation therapy: In this type of testicular cancer treatment high energy X-rays or other types of radiation are used to kill cancer cells. The rays are aimed at the tumor and also the tissue around it. Radiation therapy is a local therapy and affects cells only in the treated area. Testicular cancer may also be treated in combination with surgery or chemotherapy. Radiation therapy is used to shrink a large tumor before surgery or destroy cancer cells. In external radiation therapy a machine outside the body is used to send radiation towards the cancer. In internal radiation, radioactive substances are used sealed in needles, seeds, wires and catheters that are placed near the cancer. The radiation therapy is given by considering the type and stage of cancer.

3. Chemotherapy: In this type of testicular cancer treatment by drugs, the aim is to stop the growth of cancer cells or stop them from dividing. Chemotherapy is either given by mouth or injected into a vein or muscle. The drug enters the blood stream and reach cancer cells throughout the body. This is called as systemic chemotherapy. By regional chemotherapy, the drug is placed directly into the spinal column, an organ, or a body cavity such as the abdomen the drug mainly affects the cancer cells present in those areas.

Chemotherapy helps in various ways like it shrinks the tumor before surgery, can be used with radiation therapy in combination when surgery is not possible or to relieve symptoms in advanced cases.

4. High-does chemotherapy along with stem cell transplant: This is a kind of treatment of testicular cancer in which high doses of chemotherapy and blood-forming cells get destroyed by the cancer treatment. The stem cells that are removed from the blood or the bone marrow are frozen and stored. After the completion of chemotherapy, the stem cells are then thawed and given back to the patient. These stem cells which are reinfused into the body grow and restore the blood cells of the body.

5. Clinical trials: This is a study that is used to test new forms of therapy. New drugs, with different approaches to surgery or radiation treatments and new methods are used. A patient might want to participate in clinical trails if having advanced stages of testicular cancer.
