Sinus Cancer Treatment

There are different types of sinus cancer treatments. The three types of standard treatments are:

Surgery: Surgery is the first and common sinus cancer treatment for all types of paranasal sinus cancer. A cancer and some of the healthy tissue and bone around the cancer could be removed during surgery. Lymph nodes in the neck and other tissues might be removed in case the cancer has spread.

Radiation therapy: High energy X-rays are used in radiation therapy to kill cancer cells or restrict them from growing.
In external radiation therapy a machine is used which is outside the body and the radiation is sent towards the cancer. The total dose of radiation therapy might sometimes be divided into smaller doses which are given over a period of many days. This is called fractionation.
In internal radiation therapy radioactive substance sealed in needles, seeds, wires or catheters are placed directly into the cancer.

Chemotherapy: Drugs are used to stop the cancer cells from growing either by killing or stopping them from dividing in the sinus cancer treatment by chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is either taken by mouth or injected into a vein or muscle. The drug then enters the blood stream and is able to reach the cancer cells present throughout the body. Chemotherapy is also given in combination in which more than one anticancer drug is combined.

Sinus cancer treatment by stage:

1. In stage 1 of maxillary sinus cancer the sinus cancer treatment is given by surgery. The operation involves removal of bone and tissue from the maxillary sinus. Radiotherapy might be required to kill if any cancer cells are remaining.
2. In stage 2 of maxillary sinus cancer either surgery or radiotherapy before or after the surgery is given. If a person is not fit for the surgery, radiation therapy alone could be given.
3. Sinus cancer treatment for stage 3 maxillary sinus cancer is surgery (radical or extended maxillectomy) and radiation therapy. Radiation therapy could be given before or after the surgery. Some people might also have radiotherapy or chemotherapy before surgery to shrink the cancer which makes it easier for the surgeon to remove the cancer. This treatment is called as .neoadjuvant treatment.. A neck dissection or radiotherapy is done if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes.
4. For stage 4 maxillary sinus, radiotherapy is usually the treatment option. In case the sinuses are blocked too much then surgery might have to be done before the treatment of radiotherapy.

There are different options for ethmoid sinus cancer treatment:

Operations of ethmoid sinus cancer are more extensive compared to maxillary sinus cancer. Treatment by surgery might be difficult to treat this cancer as the sinuses are located very close to the base of the skull and the eye sockets.

Stage 1 and 2: If the cancer is at a small stage the cancer could be removed by the procedure called ethmoidectomy. Treatment by radiotherapy is also done in most of the cases.

Stage 3 and 4: At any of these stages, sinus cancer treatment by craniofacial surgery and radiotherapy are done. Radiotherapy is given before or after the surgery.

Treatment of sphemoid sinus cancer: Radiotherapy is normally used to treat these type of cancers.

Treatment of nasal cavity cancer : The treatment of nasal cavity cancer depends on the location and stage of the cancer. If the cancer is in the nasal septum i.e. the tissue separating the two sides of the nose then treatment by surgery is possible. If the cancer is elsewhere in the nasal cavity then treatment by radiotherapy is the best option as it does not affect the shape of the nose. In advanced stage the cancer is treated by radiotherapy before of after surgery.

Melanoma or sarcoma nasal cancers could be treated by surgery. Sinus cancer treatment by radiotherapy or chemotherapy is done for the lymphomas of the nasal cavity.
