Prostate Cancer Treatment

The prostate cancer treatment depends on various factors like how fast the cancer grows, how much it has spread and the age and general health of the patient. Radiation therapy and radical prostatectomy is given if tumors are still inside the prostrate. Watchful waiting another is another treatment option given until the tumor grows bigger.

Radical Prostatectomy is a prostate cancer treatment wherein the whole prostrate gland is removed including surrounding lymph nodes. This treatment is possible for stage on and stage two of prostate cancer. Keyhole surgery is a new surgical treatment where the prostrate is removed through small incisions and robot-assisted surgery.

Prostate cancer treatment through radiotherapy uses high-powered X-ray radiation to destroy cancer cells. Anesthesia is not required with this treatment as it is not painful. Different techniques like conformal radiotherapy, high-resolution intensity modulated radiotherapy, implant radiation therapy and brachytherapy are used.

Radioactive seed Implants or Brachytherapy delivers a higher dose of radiation than external beams. In this kind of treatment 40-100 rice sized radioactive seeds are placed in prostate through ultrasound guided needles. This procedure is done under general anesthesia. Sometimes hormone therapy is recommended

Active- monitoring or watchful waiting is particularly meant for slow growing tumors and stage one of prostate cancer. In which a patient.s condition is monitored through routine check-ups.

Hormone therapy is a prostate cancer treatment where the action of the male sex hormone is blocked. It is usually used in combination with other treatments. This slows the growth and spread of prostrate tumors but do not kill the cancer cells. Surgical hormone therapy involves removal of testicles which is called as orchidectomy. This treatment is given to patients having stage four of prostate cancer.

Chemotherapy is recommended when the hormone treatment stops working. Treatment by chemotherapy involves use of drugs to stop the growth of cancer cells either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Chemotherapy could either be given by mouth or injected through veins. The drug enters the bloodstream and can reach cancer cells throughout the body.

Prostate cancer treatment by biological therapy also called biotherapy or immunotherapy uses the patient.s immune system to fight cancer. Substances made by the body are used to boost, direct and restore the natural defenses of the body to fight cancer.

Cryotherapy is a surgery in which the prostrate is frozen with a liquid gas to destroy the cancer cells.

Treatment of Prostate cancer by ultrasound is given using a machine that gives off high frequency sound waves to destroy cancer cells. This treatment heats up the cancer cells and are destroyed. An endorectal probe is used to make the sound waves.

Following are the treatment options for recurrent prostate cancer:
1. Treatment by radiation therapy.
2. Prostatectomy meant for patients who have initially undergone radiation therapy.
3. Hormone therapy
4. A clinical trial of ultra-sound.
5. A clinical trial of chemotherapy or biological therapy.
6. Pain medication, external radiation therapy could be administered.
7. Palliative therapy is given to lessen bone pain.
