Penile Cancer Treatment

Different types of penile cancer treatment options are available for patients suffering from penile cancer. Some are standard treatments and some are being tested in clinical trials. When clinical trials are better treatment options then they become standard treatments. There are three types of standard treatment options:

1. Surgery: This is the most common penile cancer treatment for all types of penile cancer. They are as follows:

a. Mohs surgery: In this treatment the tumor is cut from the skin in thin layers. The edges of the tumor and each layer removed is viewed under microscope to check if there any cancer cells. These layers are removed till no more cancer cells are detected. Very little normal tissues are removed in this type of surgery and are normally used to remove the cancer on the skin.

b. Laser surgery: In this surgical procedure a laser beam which is a narrow beam of intense light is used as a knife to make bloodless cuts in tissue or to remove the tumor.

c. Cryosurgery or cryotherapy: In this treatment an instrument is used to freeze and destroy abnormal tissues.

d. Circumcision: This is a surgery in which part or all the foreskin of the penis is removed.

e. Wide local excision: This is a type of surgery in which only the cancer as well as some normal tissue around it is removed.

f. Amputation of the penis: This is a penile cancer treatment in which part or whole of the penis is removed. Partly removal is called as partial penectomy and complete removal is called as total penectomy.

Lymph nodes in the groin may also be removed during the surgery.

2. Radiation therapy: In this type of penile cancer treatment high energy X-rays or other types of radiation are used to kill cancer cells. The rays are aimed at the tumor and also the tissue around it. Radiation therapy is a local therapy and affects cells only in the treated area. Penile cancer may also be treated in combination with surgery or chemotherapy. Radiation therapy is used to shrink a large tumor before surgery or destroy cancer cells. In external radiation therapy a machine outside the body is used to send radiation towards the cancer. In internal radiation, radioactive substances are used sealed in needles, seeds, wires and catheters that are placed near the cancer. The radiation therapy is given by considering the type and stage of cancer.

3. Chemotherapy: In this type of penile cancer treatment by drugs, aim is to stop the growth of cancer cells or stop them from dividing. Chemotherapy is either given by mouth i.e., a pill or injected into a vein or a muscle. The drug enters the blood stream and reach cancer cells throughout the body. This is known as systemic chemotherapy. In regional chemotherapy, the drug is placed directly into the spinal column, an organ, or a body cavity such as the abdomen the drug mainly affects the cancer cells present in those areas.

4. Biological therapy: In this penile cancer treatment, the patient.s immune system is used to fight cancer. This therapy is given by injection into a vein. Penile cancer treatment by biological therapy improves the body.s natural defenses against cancer. The cancer cells in the blood and bone marrow are killed. Special immune cells and proteins are used to stimulate the immune system of the body.

5. Radiosensitizers are drugs that are used to make tumor cells more sensitive to radiation therapy. Treatment of Penile cancer with combining radiation therapy and radiosensitizers might kill the tumor cells.

6. Sentinel lymph node biopsy followed by surgery: In this procedure the sentinel lymph node is removed during surgery. This is the first lymph node which receives lymphatic drainage from a tumor. A radioactive substance or blue dye is injected near the tumor which flows through the lymph ducts to the lymph nodes. The tumor is viewed under a microscope for cancer cells. After this biopsy, the cancer is removed.
