Mouth Cancer TreatmentThe mouth cancer treatment depends on various factors like location, size, type and the extent and stage of the tumor. The patient.s age and general health is also considered at the time of the treatment. Normally any kind of dental work has to be done before the beginning of the treatment as the mouth might become sensitive and might get infected due to the cancer treatment. Following are the different mouth cancer treatment: 1. Surgery: Surgery is the common treatment of mouth cancer given to remove the cancer in the mouth normally when it is in the early stages. If the cancer has spread then the lymph nodes in the neck are also removed. The surgery of the floor of the mouth cancer depends on the location, size and type of mouth cancer. Most likely the operation takes place under general anesthetic. In some cases, laser surgery is also performed wherein the surgeon uses a narrow, intense beam of light to cut out the cancer. Different techniques of surgery are used which are as follows:
A. Primary tumor resection: The complete tumor and its surrounding area of tissue are removed. 2. Radiation therapy: In this mouth cancer treatment high-energy X-rays, electrobeams or radioactive isotopes are used to destroy the cancer cells or shrinking the tumors. Radiation therapy is a local therapy and affects only the cells in the treated areas. The nearest tissues are not damaged in this process. Radiation therapy kills the cancer cells if they are left behind after the surgery. Radiotherapy can cause side-effects such as painful inflammation of the lining of the mouth. Some normal cells along with are cancerous cells do get damaged.
3D Conformal radiation treatments are also used in which computer tomography planning is used to image and reconstruct the tumor and surrounding tissues in three dimensions. Intensity Modulated radiotherapy can treat tumors which are difficult to reach in areas like spine, neck, head, lung and brain. High doses of radiation are given and also there is less destruction of healthy tissues. Tomotherapy is again another advanced radiation therapy given to patients. In this technique powerful doses of radiation are given which are precise. They are powerful enough to strike hard to reach tumors in the mouth or throat. 3. Chemotherapy: Drugs are used to destroy the cancer cells in this mouth cancer treatment. Chemotherapy is either administered orally or into the veins of the body. Chemotherapy is also used in combination with radiation therapy. 4. Reconstructive surgery: This surgery is done to recover the physical appearance and the condition of the mouth which depends upon the location, size and spread of the cancer. |
