Lymph Node Cancer TreatmentThe treatment of lymph node cancer depends on patient.s situation like his general health and type of cancer. The different types of lymph node cancer treatment options are as follows: 1. Surgery: Treating body illness by removing body tissue is called as surgery. Surgery is used when it is possible to remove the tumor and nearby tissues that contain cancer cells. Surgery is done to remove the primary tumor of the initial cancer even if it is not possible to remove the entire cancer by surgery. 2. Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is a lymph node cancer treatment given to treat lymph node cancer. Anti-cancer drugs are used to destroy lymph node cancer cells either by destroying them or stopping them from dividing. These drugs are either given through a vein or by mouth. Chemotherapy may be given alone or in combination with radiation therapy. Fractionated-dose chemotherapy: This is a form of chemotherapy in which a standard chemotherapy is dose is divided into small amounts and given over a longer period of time. These drugs are introduced in a patient.s body over a period of time and hence work against the cancer cells over a long period of time. 3. Immunotherapy or biotherapy: Lymph node cancer may also develop if the body.s immune system is weak and not functioning properly. This lymph node cancer treatment stimulates and enhances the body.s immune system responses. This therapy is useful for preventing the growth of cancer cells and prevents the cancer cells to spread to other parts of the body. This therapy also works to enhance the ability of the body to repair or replace normal cells which might get destroyed by other lymph node cancer treatments like chemotherapy or radiation therapy. 4. Radiation therapy: This therapy is not only used to destroy the cancer cells but also to provide relief from symptoms. Radiation therapy may be used alone as a lymph node cancer treatment or in combination with other treatments like chemotherapy or other treatments. Radiation therapy is used to shrink a large tumor before surgery or destroy cancer cells. In external radiation therapy a machine outside the body is used to send radiation towards the cancer. In internal radiation, radioactive substances are used sealed in needles, seeds, wires and catheters that are placed near the cancer. 5. Tomo therapy: This therapy is one the leading options for lymph node cancer treatment. In this type of treatment small and precise radiation beams are directed to places with tumors which are difficult to reach. The tumors are targeted accurately with in-built CT-scanning to confirm the shape and position of the tumor before the delivery of the radiation treatment. The radiation is directly focused on the tumor or cancer cells, and reducing the danger of healthy tissues getting exposed to radiation. 6. Stem cell transplantation: In this treatment healthy blood forming stem cells are given to the patient through a flexible tube which is placed in a large vein in the neck or chest area. This helps in the development of new blood cells from the transplanted stem cells. The stem cells may come from the patients own body or from a donor. Autologous stem cell transplantation: The patient.s own stem cells are used for the transplant. The stem cells are removed, and frozen and stored. After the patient receives chemotherapy or radiation therapy the stem cells are thawed and transplanted back to the patient. Allogeneic stem cell transplantation: In this type, a healthy stem cell is used from the donor. Blood tests are done to make sure that the donor.s cells match with patient.s cells. Normally the stem cell of a close relative like a sibling or a parent is used. Syngeneic stem cell transplant: In this type of lymph node cancer treatment, stem cell from the patient.s healthy identical twin is used. |
