Larynx Cancer Treatment

Different types of larynx cancer treatment options are available for patients suffering from larynx cancer. Some are standard treatments and some are being tested in clinical trials. There are types of standard treatment:

1. Radiation therapy: In this type of larynx cancer treatment high energy X-rays or other types of radiation are used to kill cancer cells. The rays are aimed at the tumor and also the tissue around it. Radiation therapy is a local therapy and affects cells only in the treated area. Laryngeal cancer may also be treated in combination with surgery or chemotherapy. Radiation therapy is used to shrink a large tumor before surgery or destroy cancer cells. In external radiation therapy a machine outside the body is used to send radiation towards the cancer. In internal radiation, radioactive substances are used sealed in needles, seeds, wires and catheters that are placed near the cancer. If external radiation therapy is given to the thyroid or the pituitary gland the thyroid gland may change the way it works. The radiation therapy is given by considering the type and stage of cancer.

2. Surgery: In this type of larynx cancer treatment, a scalpel or laser is used to remove the cancer. The type of surgery depends on the location and size of the cancer. There are several types of surgery to remove part of the larynx also called as laryngectomy.

a. Total laryngectomy: Entire larynx is removed in this type of surgery.

b. Partial laryngectomy: Part of the larynx is removed in this type of surgery.

c. Supraglottic laryngectomy: This is a surgery to remove supraglottis.

d. Hemilaryngectomy: In this type of surgery half of the larynx (voice box) is removed.

e. Thyroidectomy: This is surgery involves removal of part of the thyroid gland.

f. Laser surgery: in this surgical procedure, a laser beam that is a narrow beam of intense light is used as a knife to make bloodless cuts in tissue and remove a tumor.

g. Cordectomy: This kind of surgery is done to remove only the vocal cords.

3. Chemotherapy: In this type of larynx cancer treatment by drugs, aim is to stop the growth of cancer cells or stop them from dividing. Chemotherapy is either given by mouth or injected into a vein. The drug enters the blood stream and reach cancer cells throughout the body. This is called as systemic chemotherapy. By regional chemotherapy, the drug is placed directly into the spinal column, an organ, or a body cavity such as the abdomen the drug mainly affects the cancer cells present in those areas.

Chemotherapy or radiation therapy might be given after surgery to some patients to kill cancer cells that are left. This type of larynx cancer treatment given after surgery, which aims at curing, is called as adjuvant therapy.

Chemoprevention is the use of drugs, vitamins or other substances which reduces the risk of cancer from developing or also reducing the risk of cancer recurring or coming back.

Radiosensitizers are drugs that are used to make tumor cells more sensitive to radiation therapy. Treatment of Larynx cancer with combining radiation therapy and radiosensitizers might kill the tumor cells.
