Eye Cancer Treatment

Different treatment options are meant for different types of eye cancer.

Treatment for melanoma of the eyeball: Eye cancer treatment for the melanoma of the eye is surgery or radiotherapy which depends on the location and size of the tumor and how much it is affecting the eye.

If the tumor has already affected the eye sight then the eye has to be removed by surgery. If there is eyesight present then the surgeon would remove the tumor, give radiotherapy or laser surgery.

Treatment for iris melanoma: Usually this type of eye cancer grows quite slowly. If the tumor grows then following are the eye cancer treatment options:
Removal of the iris.
Removal of the iris along with the tissues around the layer covering the front of the eye (cornea).
Removal of the iris and the ciliary body.
Removal of the entire eye (enucleation).
Radiotherapy might be given to some of the iris melanomas.

Treatment for choroid or ciliary body melanoma: Small melanoma requires treatments by radiotherapy which uses high energy rays, laser surgery, surgery to remove only the tumor or surgery to remove the entire eye.

The different types of radiotherapy to the eye include: Brachytherapy in which the radiotherapy is given from inside the eye. It involves small operation under general anesthetic. Tiny plates are sewn in place above the eye tumor.

In external beam therapy radiotherapy beams are directed from outside the eye. This treatment could be given from different machines. Some are meant to treat the cancers near the surface of the skin and some are meant to treat the cancers deeper inside the body.

For medium-sized melanomas the eye cancer treatment includes radiotherapy, surgery to remove the tumor or surgery to remove the complete eye. Laser surgery does not usually work well with medium sized tumors. Surgery is normally the option for large melanomas.

Treatment for melanomas that have spread outside the eye: If the tumor spreads outside the eye that is to the optic nerve or the eye socket it.s called as .extraocular melanoma.. Surgery might be an option to remove the eye. The surgery of the eye socket could also be done to ensure that the entire cancer is removed.

Treatment for recurrent eye melanoma: If in case the cancer comes back in the eyeball, then the eye cancer treatment by surgery is done to remove the eye. Radiotherapy after surgery might be given to kill the complete cancer cells.

If the cancer comes back outside the eye ball then chemotherapy or biological therapy or both may be given. Biological therapy is usually given to treat the advanced stage of eye melanoma.

Treatment for lymphoma of the eye: In this type of cancer called as intraocular lymphoma the eye cancer treatment that is given to the eye and the brain is radiotherapy. This treats the cancer of the eye completely and also prevents it from coming back to the brain or spinal cord.

Another treatment of eye cancer for the intraocular lymphoma is chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is injected into the fluid around the spinal chord. This treatment might be given along with radiotherapy.
