Bone Marrow Cancer TreatmentSeveral factors are considered while treating bone marrow cancer like patient.s age, stage of cancer and general health. Different types of treatment like surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant are possible. 1. Surgery: Bone marrow cancer treatment by surgery aims to remove the growth of cancer 2. Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy kills rapidly dividing cells including cancer cells. Chemotherapy drugs are taken in various forms. In Intravenous the drug is injected into a vein by a needle. It is also given orally in the form of a pill. Injection is also used wherein the doctor injects the drug directly into the muscle or the cancerous skin. High- dose chemotherapy can also be life threatening for bone marrow. Hence high-dose chemotherapy is combined with bone marrow rescue strategies. In bone marrow rescue, bone marrow cells are harvested before chemotherapy and again given back to the patient after chemotherapy. Chemotherapy may be used as an only bone marrow treatment or may be given in combination with radiation therapy or surgery. 3. Bone marrow transplantation: In this type of bone marrow treatment healthy bone marrow is transplanted or replaced bone marrow which is affected by cancer. It is either the patient or another person for a bone marrow transplant. Patients who donate their own marrow, their marrow are protected from chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Once these two treatments are complete, then the bone marrow is given back to the patient which is called as autologous transplant. On the other hand, when the patients receive bone marrow from a donor then it is called as allogeneic transplant. This is done when the bone marrow is destroyed by cancer cells. In syngeneic transplant, transplant is taken from identical twin. There are different stages of bone marrow transplant which are as follows: a. Conditioning: In this type of bone marrow treatment high doses of chemotherapy and total body irradiation to destroy the cancerous cells are given to the patient. The ability of bone marrow to produce new stem cells is destroyed. Hence bone marrow is rescued with donor stem cells. b. Bone marrow harvesting: Under general anesthetic bone marrow is collected from the donor. c. Processing: Bone marrow is processed to remove red cells. Autologous transplants are treated by chemotherapy or monoclonal antibodies. Allogeneic transplants are treated with antibodies to remove T cells. d. Transplantation: The donor cells that are processed are injected back into the patient. Intensive support therapy is given during this period. 4. Radiation therapy: High .energy rays are directed at the place where there is cancer to stop the cancer cells either from growing or dividing. It is used either to shrink the tumor or to destroy remaining cancer cells. In external radiation therapy, rays are beamed at the cancer. 5. Hormone therapy: In this type of bone marrow treatment cancer cells are deprived of hormones so that they do not grow. Drugs are given by mouth or by injection to remove hormone producing organs surgery might also be done. 6. Biological therapy or immunotherapy: In this type of treatment of bone marrow substances that stimulate the body.s immune system to fight the cancer or to reduce side effects are used. |
