Bone Cancer TreatmentThe bone cancer treatment depends on the type of bone cancer; location of bone cancer, how aggressive is the cancer and whether the cancer has affected the surrounding tissues and patient.s age and general health conditions. The three main types of bone cancer treatment are: Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The common therapies are surgery and chemotherapy. Treatment by surgery: The different types of surgery are limb salvage surgery, amputation, joint replacements, reconstructive surgery, palliative surgery to relieve bone pain and surgery to remove cancer that has spread. Limb salvage surgery is skilled and complicated. In this type a piece of bone containing the cancer is replaced with a metal replacement piece or a bone graft. Amputation: This treatment is given when the cancer has spread in to the tissues surrounding the bones. This is the only way to stop the cancer coming back. Chemotherapy: Bone cancer treatment by chemotherapy includes fractionated-dose chemotherapy, Intra-Arterial chemotherapy and intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Chemotherapy can cure the cancer, controls the cancer and relieves the symptoms of cancer. Bone cancers also respond well to chemotherapy. Chemotherapy with surgery is very likely to be given to treat bone cancer. Chemotherapy after surgery or adjuvant treatment lowers the risk of cancer coming back. Bone cancer treatment by chemotherapy might be given before surgery to try to shrink cancer, after surgery to try to stop the cancer coming back, to reduce the symptoms of advance cancer and to slow down advanced cancer. Drugs are given through an injection, through a drip into the arm or through a .central. line or .PICC. line. Neoadjuvant treatment or chemotherapy before surgery is a treatment for primary bone cancer. In this type of bone cancer treatment the cancer is shrunk before removing the tumor. Chemotherapy after surgery is called as adjuvant treatment. The risk of the cancer coming back after surgery is highly reduced after adjuvant therapy. This treatment slows down the growth of cancer. Radiotherapy: Bone cancer treatment by radiotherapy is given to shrink a tumor if it is in a part of the body that is difficult to operate. Surgery becomes easier after shrinking the cancer. This therapy is given before or after the surgery. Radiotherapy could also be given after surgery to kill cancer cells that may have been left behind. This treatment uses high energy waves to cure cancer. Radiotherapy also controls the growth of advanced cancers and relieves the symptoms. The different types of bone cancer treatment by radiotherapy are: 3D Conformal Radiation, External beam radiation, and High-dose rate brachytherapy, IMRT, Mammosite, Therasphere and Tomotherapy. Intensity Modulated Radiation therapy (IMRT): This is a three dimensional radiotherapy. A powerful, advanced computer programme is used to plan a precise dose of radiation in three dimensions. Hormone therapy: Treatment of Bone cancer by hormone therapy might involve removal of the organs which produce hormones to promote the growth of certain type of cancers.
Certain drugs called as biphosphonates can be used to reduce bone pain and also slow down bone damage.
